How to Find Your Correct Bracelet Size (Even When Buying Online)

One of the biggest worries when buying a bracelet online is simple:
What if it doesn’t fit right?

Bracelet sizing sounds straightforward — measure your wrist and match the number. But comfort isn’t just about inches. The way a bracelet sits, moves, and feels on your wrist matters just as much as the measurement itself.

The good news is you don’t need to calculate bead spacing or understand jewelry construction. You just need to know your wrist size and how you like a bracelet to feel. The designer accounts for the rest.

Why Bracelet Fit Feels Different for Everyone

Two people with the same wrist size can prefer completely different bracelet fits. Some like a bracelet that stays in one place, while others like movement and drape. Neither is correct — it’s personal comfort.

When ordering handmade jewelry online, you aren’t trying to match a universal size. You’re choosing a fit preference.

How to Measure Your Wrist (The Only Measurement You Need)

Measuring your wrist for bracelets is very simple.  All you need is:

  • A tape measure or ruler

  • A long, thin piece of paper or piece of string

Steps to Measuring Your Wrist To Find You Correct Bracelet Size

  1. Take your piece of string, tape measure, or piece of paper and wrap it around your wrist just below your wrist bone.

  2. If you are using a tape measure, then just simply read the number of inches you get.

  3. If you are using a string or paper then just mark the spot where the end of the paper or string and the extra slack end overlap and measure that section with a ruler.

This number is your wrist size — not the bracelet size. Finished bracelets are intentionally made slightly larger so they can move comfortably.

Choosing Your Preferred Fit

After measuring your wrist, the next step is deciding how you want the bracelet to feel when worn.

Snug Fit

  • Stays in one place

  • Good for smaller beads

  • Minimal movement

Comfort Fit (Most Common)

  • Moves slightly on the wrist

  • Balanced look and feel

  • Everyday wear friendly

Loose Fit

  • Slides along wrist

  • More relaxed appearance

  • Often preferred for chunkier styles

Why Finished Bracelet Length Is Bigger Than Your Wrist

If you were to order a handmade bracelet, and measure the length, it’s likely going to be longer than the size that you ordered.  That's because all of the other things that goes into sizing a handmade bracelet  has already been thought of and taken care of by the jewelry designer.

There’s a number of things that have to be thought about that go into sizing a handmade bracelet when you are making it.

  • Designers automatically account for bead size and spacing during construction.

Handmade bracelets are designed with flexibility in mind. Designers automatically adjust for bead size, clasp space, and natural wrist movement.

That means you never need to calculate bead diameter or chain thickness yourself — that’s part of the construction process.

Different Styles Feel Different

Beaded or wire-wrapped bracelets

  • Feel more structured

  • Sit slightly higher on the wrist

Chain bracelets

  • Drape naturally

  • Often feel looser at the same length

Link bracelets

  • A balance between structure and movement

This is why two bracelets with the same measurement can feel completely different when worn.
