What Types of Jewelry Use Wire Wrapping?
Wire wrapped jewelry refers to any piece of jewelry where stones, beads, or other elements are secured using wire instead of glue or soldering. This technique is commonly used in handmade jewelry, especially for crystal and gemstone designs, because it allows the natural shape of the stone to remain visible while still being securely held in place.
Wire wrapped jewelry can include necklaces, bracelets, and matching sets, and each piece is typically unique due to the handmade nature of the wrapping process.
Wire wrapping can be used in several types of handmade jewelry, making it a very versatile technique. It’s most commonly seen in necklaces and bracelets, especially those featuring crystals, gemstones, or artisan glass beads.
In necklaces, wire wrapping is often used to secure pendants, allowing natural stones to remain the focal point of the design. This is especially common in crystal and gemstone pendant necklaces, where the shape and texture of the stone are part of the overall look.
In bracelets, wire wrapping is used to connect beads together, creating a more structured design. This gives the bracelet a slightly more detailed and handcrafted feel compared to simple strung bead styles.
Wire wrapping can also be used in matching jewelry sets, where both the necklace and bracelet are designed using similar materials and techniques to create a cohesive look.
Because of its flexibility, wire wrapping works well across different styles — from simple everyday pieces to more expressive, statement designs.
In the world of jewelry making, there are many different techniques — soldering, beading, and hand stamping, just to name a few. The one I want to focus on today is wire wrapping.
So what is wire wrapping? Wire wrapping is one of the oldest and most rustic forms of handmade jewelry making. It involves wrapping strands of copper, gold, or silver wire around a bead or stone to secure it in place.
This allows the jewelry to stay secure while still keeping the natural beauty of the crystal or gemstone visible.
A Brief History of Wire Wrapped Jewelry
Wire wrapping is one of the oldest jewelry-making techniques in the world. Long before modern soldering tools existed, ancient jewelers used wire to secure stones and create decorative designs. Archaeologists have found wire-wrapped jewelry dating back thousands of years in ancient civilizations including Egypt, Rome, and Mesopotamia.
The technique allowed artisans to shape metal wire around stones without drilling or gluing them, making it perfect for natural crystals and gemstones. Today, the method is still widely used in handmade jewelry because it allows artists to create detailed, secure settings using simple tools and materials.

How Wire Wrapping Works
This technique is very minimalist. Wire wrapping usually involves: metal wire (often copper, silver, or gold tone), pliers or just your hands, and natural stones or beads. The wire is bent and wrapped around the stone to hold it in place and create a design. The wire doubles both as structure and decoration.

Why Many Handmade Jewelers Use Wire Wrapping
There are many reasons jewelers choose wire wrapping.
First, it doesn’t damage the stone. There are no prongs or settings digging into the material. Instead, the wire is carefully shaped around the stone, usually by hand, making it a gentler technique.
Wire wrapping also allows stones to be used without drilling or glue, which keeps the process simple and preserves the natural form of the material.
It also works especially well with natural shapes. Crystals and gemstones aren’t always perfectly uniform, and wire wrapping allows them to be secured without forcing them into a standard setting.
And finally — one of the biggest reasons — it creates unique pieces. Every wrap is slightly different, which means no two pieces are exactly the same.

Simply Rustic Jewelry Styles That Use Wire Wrapping
Simply Rustic Jewelry is handmade crystal and gemstone jewelry that specializes in wire wrapping. I really wanted to celebrate the natural beauty of stones. That being said, the wiring is very minimal. All styles have some silver, gold and bronze wire wrapped pieces. These are my styles.
Wire Wrapped Stone Pendant Necklaces
The first thing that I offer is necklaces. The first style is wire wrapped stone pendants. This being tumbles or raw crystals or gemstone with a simple wire wrapping. I do prefer to keep the wiring as simple as it can be to let the stone really shine in the piece.

Beaded Pendant Necklaces
The next style is beaded pendant necklaces. The beads are always gemstone, crystal or glass and it’s either a pendant with 1 large bead, a string of vertical beads or a string of horizontal beads. This of course comes with silver, gold or bronze wiring.

Wire Wrapped Bracelets
I also offer wire wrapped bracelets, which are some of the most intricate pieces that I make. It’s a beaded bracelet with wire wrapping around the outside. As with all my jewelry, they come in with gold wire, silver or bronze and the beads are crystal, gemstone or glass.

Link Bracelets
The next style is link bracelets. Wire-connected links with crystal, gemstone and glass beads. This style is a lot more flexible whereas the beaded bracelets are a bit more stiff.

What Makes Handmade Wire Wrapped Jewelry Special
Wire wrapped jewelry is special because it has a charm that a lot of other jewelry doesn’t have. It is one of the best handmade jewelry techniques for making unique, one of a kind jewelry because every wrap is slightly different, and the natural stones vary when it comes to size, color, and texture. This means no two pieces are exactly the same.
Is Wire Wrapped Jewelry Durable?
The short answer is yes — wire wrapped jewelry is durable when made correctly.
However, like all jewelry, it benefits from proper care. Avoid excessive friction, remove it before water exposure, and store it properly when not in use.
