Necklace Length Guide: Is This Necklace The Right Fit For Me?

Why Necklace Length Matters

Shopping for necklaces online can be tricky. It’s often hard to tell where a necklace will actually sit once you’re wearing it—especially when pendants, chain thickness, and weight all come into play.

Necklace length ultimately comes down to personal preference, but understanding how different lengths work can help you choose with confidence.

This necklace length guide will walk you through common necklace lengths, how they sit, and how to choose the right fit for your style.

Common Necklace Lengths Explained

Choker (14–16 inches)
Sits high on the neck with a fitted look. Great for minimalist styles or layered looks.

Princess Length (18 inches)
The most common necklace length. Sits at the collarbone and works well with pendants.

Matinee (20–24 inches)
A longer, more relaxed length. Great for layering or creating a more casual look.

Opera (26+ inches)
Long and dramatic. Best for statement pieces.

  Necklace Length Chart (Quick Reference)

  • 14–16 inches → base of the neck (choker)
  • 18 inches → collarbone (most common)
  • 20–24 inches → below collarbone (layering)
  • 26+ inches → long, statement style

How Pendant Size Affects Necklace Length

The size and weight of a pendant can change how a necklace sits.

For example, an 18-inch chain typically sits at the collarbone. But if you add a larger pendant, it can drop lower toward the top of the chest.

Heavier pendants can also pull the necklace down slightly, while smaller pendants have less impact.

How to Measure Necklace Length at Home

Measuring necklace length is simple:

  • Use a string or strip of paper around your neck
  • Mark the length and measure it
  • Or measure a necklace you already own

This helps you visualize exactly where different lengths will sit.

How to Choose the Right Necklace Length

Choosing the right length comes down to a few key factors:

Style preference

  • Shorter lengths → subtle, close to the neck
  • Longer lengths → more statement and relaxed

Outfit

  • High neckline → longer necklace
  • Lower neckline → shorter or mid-length necklace

Comfort

  • Do you prefer a tighter fit or a looser feel?

Layering

  • Use different chain lengths to avoid tangling

Common Mistakes When Choosing Necklace Lengths

Choosing Too Long/Short For Pendant

The best thing to do when thinking about pendants and the length that that will add is look at descriptions.

For example, my summer popsicle necklace, the pendant is 3cm by 2cm and the bail is 2cm.  That’s a total of 5cm.  And it has an 18 inch chain.  So that's a total of almost 20 inches.  And it’s heavy too so that adds to it.  Those are all things to take into account.

Not Considering Chain Thickness

Chain thickness affects 2 things.  The weight and the overall vibe of the necklace,  For this, I’ll compare 2 pieces.  The first is my Egyptian Goddess Necklace.  This chain is 10mm.  Thick, heavy and has a much bolder look.

Now, the second.  It’s called the Garnet Moss Necklace.  It has a 3mm chain.  Thin, light and more subtle.  Both gorgeous.  Just down to personal preference.

Not Thinking About Layering

Like I said before, when it comes to layering,  You have to get multiple different chain lengths.  You cannot get 2 of the same lengths, they will just lay on top of each other and tangle it.

Not Considering Body Proportions

It's important to remember that jewelry is like clothing in the way that it looks different on different bodies.  You may look at your friend who has on a princess line necklace and the pendant sits at the breastbone.  But she is a few inches taller than you and has a longer torso.  You may try it on and the pendant sits a little lower and looks like a matinee necklace.  You have to be thinking about that.
